We are Patrick and Carol.
Although we met in England, we were both born and raised in South Africa, and perhaps that explains our shared love of water. Whether it was the ocean, rivers, harbours or rock pools, water has always been a constant presence in our lives.
Like many people, we spent years balancing careers, responsibilities and everyday life while quietly dreaming of future adventures. Eventually we realised that "one day" had arrived, and so began the restoration of Deux Poissons and the planning of our journey through Europe's waterways.
Patrick was probably referring to the sides of his cot as port and starboard before he could walk. Boating is firmly in his DNA.
With a lifetime spent around boats and the water, he is happiest at the helm, studying charts, planning routes and finding solutions to whatever challenge the boat decides to present next. His practical skills, patience and love of all things nautical have been instrumental in transforming Deux Poissons from restoration project into floating home.
I grew up exploring the rock pools of Scarborough Beach in the Western Cape of South Africa. The sound of crashing waves and rushing water is the only music I have ever truly understood.
When I am not dreaming about our next destination, I work as a psychological therapist. I am also the writer, photographer and storyteller behind this website, documenting both the adventures and occasional mishaps that come with travelling slowly through Europe's rivers, canals and coastlines.
Together, we share a love of travel, history, old boats and discovering places that are often overlooked. Through this website we hope to share not only the journey itself, but also the people, places and stories we encounter along the way.
We are delighted to have you aboard for the adventure.
