DON PEDROS
A Don Pedro (or Dom Pedro) is a popular South African alcoholic milkshake, often served as a dessert cocktail or even just a thirst quencher in the summer heat.
Made by blending vanilla ice cream, cream, and a liqueur—most commonly Amarula, Kahlua,Baileys or whisky. Patrick’s favourite is black sambuca, but he is the exeption to the rule on so much, that we just accept this too! It is thick, creamy, and typically topped with grated dark chocolate.
Classic Don Pedro Recipe
Ingredients: 2-3 scoops quality vanilla ice cream, 50ml fresh/double cream, 1-2 shots liqueur or whisky.
Garnish: Grated dark chocolate or a crumbled chocolate Flake.
Instructions: Blend all ingredients until smooth, pour into a wine glass, and garnish.
Key Tips
Best Liqueur: Amarula is the most popular choice for a distinctly South African flavor.
Texture: It should be thick, similar to a thick milkshake, not runny.
Serving: Serve immediately with a straw.
Origin Details:
Creator: It is widely credited to Danny Ferris, a chef and owner of the former Belinzona restaurant in Blouberg, Cape Town.
Inspiration: According to legend, Ferris was visiting whisky distilleries in Scotland when he poured whisky over ice cream, creating the concept.
Adaptation: Upon returning to South Africa, he adapted the concept into a blended alcoholic milkshake.
Common Myths & Variations:
Name: It is sometimes referred to as "Dom Pedro," which may be a nod to Portuguese influence in South Africa or a myth regarding Dom Pedro I of Brazil.
Argentine Theory: While some suggest a similar dessert existed in Argentina, the popular, modern, blended Don Pedro drink is firmly recognized as a South African classic.
